Orphan Needle Case (3/26)

I have officially used 3 of the 26 orphan blocks I have hanging around.

This time I made a needle case for hand sewing. I have a great one that was a gift from someone so this will eventually be part of a giveaway.

Here is the block I started with:

orphan blocks3

You know what’s funny about these orphan blocks….I have no idea where some of them came from. I don’t remember making them – most of them.

N.E.Way….

I used a quick tutorial that Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet posted on IG. Oh, btw, I recently pre-ordered her new book from Fat Quarter Shop. I am super ‘cited about it!!! But I digress…

Here are a couple pics of the Finish #3 for 2015 Finish-A-Long

Eventually I will link to:

Off to stitch some more. Hope you all aka y’all have a stitchy kinda day!

Zippy Bag & FMQ Practice

Part of my Finish A Long list were some orphan blocks I’ve had laying around for quite some time. I knew they would make for good FMQ practice but I couldn’t just practice and then discard them.

I had these two coordinating blocks that I knew would make a cute (if not slightly large) zippy bag:

orphan blocks1

I did quite a bit of FMQ – actually I think I did too much in some places – and then turned them into a zippy bag. I think i will use this bag when I travel for my toiletries. You know those small bottles that seem to get lost in the large toiletry bag – or something like that.

Regardless of what I use it for (or maybe it will be gifted), here is finish #2 for 2015 Finish A Long (I haven’t blogged about Finish #1 yet).

2015 First Quarter Projects

Yesterday I posted all my current UFOs. Today I will make the decision on what I plan on completing this quarter. UGH…I hate making these decisions. HATE, HATE, HATE it!! However, it must be done.

I know I need to get these Hero Quilts done…all four of them (they should be done by end of February)

Rowland – top done (assuming I  don’t decide it needs borders – hmmmm)

#swoon2013 – Some blocks quilted **#swoon2013**swoon collage

Ok…I admit this list is a bit ambitious BUT one never knows what they might be in the mood to work on. I figure it is better to dream big and then if I get a great big ole burst of energy then I have included the projects on my list and can get an entry for them in the Finish A Long (which I will link to when the time is right)!

I know I haven’t said this lately so let me say it now, I am so blessed to have found such fabulous hosts for the Finish A Long. Leanne and Katy were amazing and I know Adrienne will be equally as amazing. I hope you are all enjoying it. Should you have any questions please ask away. Please remember you don’t have to have a blog to participate. You can use Flickr, Instagram, or even Facebook. All you need is the ability to link up. Let me (or any of us) know if you need help with any of these.

Well, no time like the present to get started…

2015 UFO List

Its that time of year again…you know that time when things seem to be new and fresh and all things seem to be possible. Well, it is this time of year when I look at my list of UFOs. I pray 2015 is a very different year for me. Last year was very unsettling and therefore I got very little done, did very little blogging, and honestly, felt quite poorly a great deal of the year.

As a result, my UFO list looks very similar. Similar but longer. I found a few projects that somehow never made it to the UFO list…weird. Regardless, I am excited about what 2015 will be for me creatively!!! Without further ado, here is my current UFO

  1. Batik Nature BOM – Top complete/back done **Bonnie Batik**batik nature collage

Tomorrow, I will narrow this list down a bit and tell you what I will work on this quarter (necessary for the FAL2015) and then on Sunday, I will narrow it down even further (necessary for the Lovely Year of Finishes) and tell you what I will work on this month. Accountability is important!!!!

Speaking of accountability…something else I decided to commit to for 2015 is Sew My Stash 2015. In 2014 I was real good about shopping for fabric and recently I cleaned out my scrap bin (it was seriously overflowing) and sold it for real cheap! All this combined felt like a good cleansing. Since I have so many UFOs to finish there really isn’t a need to buy any excess. **wink wink**

Well, better get started….

Finish-A-Long & IG – A Simple Tutorial

One cannot deny the major role Instagram plays in the blogging world today. It can have great impacts on the business world, it can impact your personal world both positively and negatively, and I think us quilters have seen it slowly take the place of Flickr (at least that is my observation).

Well, it’s time the for the Finish-A-Long to catch up and allow y’all to utilize Instagram to post your list at the start of each quarter and your finishes at the end of each quarter.

Currently there is a giveaway going on… all you need do is sign up to follow the new Finish-A-Long IG account @finishalong.and tag a friend in the giveaway post. Of course spreading the word on IG would be greatly appreciated as well.  On December 31st I will draw from all the followers and giveaway this FQ bundle:

This could be yours!
This could be yours!

A few people have asked how IG (instagram) will fit into the FAL (finish-a-long) world, so let me explain:

You know how you can use Flickr to post pictures of your started project (pre-finish) or your finished project and then link up with the host at the beginning or end of the quarter? Well if you so desire you can now use IG instead of Flickr (this is not to say you can’t use Flickr any longer, it’s simply another option).

And just in case you don’t know how to get your link from IG, here’s how:

#1 – Do this from your phone, tablet or something along those lines. Instagram on a pc ummm…is there a way to say this classy like…well, no….it SUCKS!!!! So don’t attempt this from your pc… Instagram is an app so do it from a tablet, phone, phablet, I think you get the picture.

#2 – At the start of the quarter, post a picture of all your WIPs with a list describing them in the comment.  PLEASE POST A SINGLE PICTURE OF ALL YOUR WIPS FOR THE QUARTER.  If you post multiple lists, it is too hard for the host to go back and match up your finishes with your list at the end of the quarter. (If you don’t have a blog and are moving from Flickr there are apps for creating collage pics on your phone – specifically for IG)  Link your list/collage post using the instructions below.  At the end of each quarter, post a separate picture of each finish, and link each picture separately using the instructions below.  Tag @finishalong and use the hashtag #2015fal in your posts! **If you need suggestions for collage apps just ask @finishalong**

#3 – When you are ready to link up – find your picture…like this one:, and scroll down to the bottom of the comments.Scroll all the way to the bottom of the comments until you find the three gray dots stacked on top of each other (like the ones inside the pink circle below) and click on them:

screen2
Android Phone
iPhone
iPhone

#4 – After you click on them you get 4 options (as long as it is your picture you are clicking on). click on “Copy Share URL”

screen3
Android Phone
iPhone
iPhone

#5 – You will get a small box (color depends on theme and type of phone). That is confirmation that it has has been copied, it will look like this:

screen4
Android Phone
iPhone
iPhone

#6 – From here you simply go to the Linky Party at On the Windy Side and paste your link in the InLinkz widget. Of course, you generally have to fill in other information, but your link is now on your clipboard. InLinkz now supports IG and you can read all about how to add your now extracted URL (link) on their blog here. **I was going to try and explain it here but they do such a good job, why reinvent the wheel?**

NOTE: I have posted two different sets of pictures, iPhone (thanks Adrienne) and Android to attempt to make this as visual as possible. Should you have any questions, email me or send me an IG message at @finishalong or @gapquilter –  I love me some IG!!!!

There you have it…a tutorial on how to get your link from IG and a giveaway to boot. Remember, you must become a follower of @finishalong on IG by December 31st in order to win the FQ bundle. Easy peasy!!

Ready for **BIG** FAL News??

How long you been following the Finish-A-Long? Since its inception in 2012 here at Quilter in The Gap…

FAL button 2

or since it was with Leanne at She Can Quilt

2013 button

Or with Katy at The Littlest Thistle

Finish Along 2014

Regardless of how long you have been following the Finish A Long you are aware that every year the hostess changes. Today I get to share with you who will be hosting in 2015!!! It’s ……..

Adrianne

of

On the Windy Side!!!!!

Let me tell you what I know….I know her energy is exhausting to me. You want to know how I know that? Simply look at her 2014 Finished Projects tab. There are 29 items on it….Seriously? I will be lucky to finish 5 this year. Now in a self-supporting, make-myself-feel-better-kinda-way I will say I have had quite the challenging year BUT I know Adrianne’s job is quite challenging and time consuming AND I follow her IG feed so I know she makes a quilt block a day on top of all these projects. Oh.Em.Gee!!

Here is your new button. This may come in handy later for giveaways and such. This is the larger size. A little later in the game we will have a smaller size for those of you who prefer that.

2015FALbutton200-1

Also the rumor mill tells me she has some pretty exciting things coming up in 2015 so keep your eyes open for those….so beans spilling here…you’ll have to wait!!!!!

This is not all the **BIG** Finish-A-Long news…..keep your eyes on Instagram for a new way to post pictures of your projects. Sometime in mid-December there will be a giveaway for those of you who decided to follow the new IG account so keep your eyes open for that. Oh and…..I will post a tutorial on how IG will work with the Linky.

Just to keep it real….as of Thanksgiving (US) you have 5 weeks for 35 days (give or take a day or 3) to get your finishes done…..that’s not much time so you better get to sewing, knitting, crocheting or whatever it is that requires your attention to call it finished.

Please take a moment and give Adrianne some love….

Time to Pack….

….but not for a trip! Instead it’s time to pack up all the prizes (and a couple things I have sold).

FAL-2014-Button small/quilterinthegap

BUT FIRST….let me announce the winner of the Premature FAL Giveaway….

the winner is none other than….

Our very own (and well loved)….

Susan of CanadianAboard

No….just kidding…oddly she doesn’t want my hexies (she has about a million of her own) and didn’t even enter the giveaway!! I just had to give her a hard time…she is lovely though!!!

Ok…now to be serious for a minute. The real winner was picked by Mr. Random:

premature fal giveaway winner

Laura (Blue Giraffe Crafts) pinned our FAL button on Pinterst and also linked up (sorry, the linky party is now closed). Before today, I was not familiar with Laura’s blog but it is super cute. She is very talented with a crochet hook (something I might be a bit jealous of hehehe). If you get a chance I hope you will check her blog out and congratulate her.

I have sent you an email Laura (if you don’t hear from me, please email me by using that envelope on the top right hand corner) so that I can get your address.

Well….I have a living room to paint. It currently looks like this:

Living Room & access to basement
Living Room & access to basement

Well….kinda! There isn’t any carpet in there…that nasty stuff had to go. I will be installing carpet next month so I have to get busy. I have three more rooms to paint: the LR and 2 bedrooms. In case I forget to tell you this later….I HATE PAINTING!!!!!!

I hope y’all have a stitchy kinda day.

Premature FAL Giveaway

I was just linking up with 2014 Q1 FAL and thinking about various aspects of the FAL. There are so many different bits required to make it successful and Leanne and Katy have done and will continue to do a great job. I am so very blessed to have friends who are A.MA.Zing!!!

In an attempt to do my part, I want to do a little giveaway in order to accomplish a couple of things – 3 things actually:

  • increase the FAL’s Pinterest exposure
  • increase the FAL’s IG Exposure
  • and ensure y’all have linked up with Katy – the 2014 hostess!

So…you will have 3 possible entries into this giveaway. I would think they are obvious at this point but let me “make it plain” (a standing joke in our family)…

Entry #1 – You can find me on IG as gapquilter …. and recently I posted a pic of the 2014 FAL Button…repost this pic with the hashtag #FALgiveaway and you are entered (please no comment on the blog for this entry)

Entry #2 – You can find me on Pinterest as gapquilter. In my sidebar —-> you will find a “Pin It” button under the FAL button. Click that button, comment on that pin with hashtag #FALgiveaway (please no comment on the blog for this entry either)

Entry #3 – Leave a comment here if you linked up your FAL Q1 list (the FAL button will take you there)

I bet you are wondering what the prize is … huh?! Well, how about this:

#FALgiveaway|quilterinthegapThe book titled “Tula Pink’s City Sampler: 100 Modern Quilt Blocks” by Tula Pink and a few hexies (and I am notorious for throwing in some fabric scraps…just sayin’). Some of the hexies are glued on the hexie paper and some are not. There are approximately a hundred hexies here. Some are fussy cut some are not. I have laid a few of them out so you can get a taste of what is there:

2014-01-12

EDITED to add: I will close the giveaway the same day the linky closes for the FAL – January 17th.

OK, now y’all know how to enter and what you could win….I only have one question….what ya waitin’ for….get to pinin’, postin’ and linkin’! Oh, and ….good luck y’all!!!

Well there you have my glorious, and discouragingly long again, list for 2014! My plan is to NOT add anymore projects (except my monthlys) in 2014 until these are done – but, then again, I say that every year! Oh well, I love sewing even if my UFO closet has a swinging door on it…LOL

Have a super stitchy day y’all – they are calling for snow here today so I have plans to sew all day!! Hmmm…better get started on those Super Hero/Americana Quilts!

2013 button

And Oh, while I am thinking about it….you have a few more days to link up your completed projects for Q4 2013. Head over to Leanne’s and link up and check out the great tutorials for this quarter while you are there! AND start working on your Q1 list for 2014…Katy (the 2014 FAL Host)  will have that linky party live in about a week!
