Back in the Land of the Living

I’m not sure if you have had it…

I’m sure you have hear about it….

I don’t recommend you obtain it….

I had it….

IT SUCKS….

I am sure by now you have figured out I am referring to the dreaded FLU!

Monday – I worked but felt……tired (nothing odd as it was our first day back after 2 weeks off).

Tuesday – I was woken up with an urgency to RUN to the bathroom. Regardless, I dressed for work. By noon, I wanted to kill my co-workers (was actually plotting their demise) and was struggling to hold my head up. I decided I needed to go home. Oh and there was the path I was wearing in the tile between my desk and bathroom. There were many other symptoms but I am really saving you the gah-rose details.

I fell asleep at 12:30 Tuesday and woke up Wednesday about 3:00 pm. Now there were a few trips to the bathroom but I’m not certain I was awake for them. The family said I was moaning in pain and took some medication but again, I’m not certain I was coherent. I really think I only woke up to cough, sneeze, hurt….basically die!

I don’t think the pain and fever stopped until Friday evening. Did I say IT SUCKED!!!!

During the course of all this my new serger arrived. I could have cared less. Dedicated post coming soon!!

THEN…

This past weekend we decided we needed a cat. So, we ventured out to the Animal Shelter and decided on a beautiful all black cat. She is 4 months old and remains nameless to this day. We simply can’t agree on a name. Let me clarify. There isn’t a large group – just me and the hubster….That’s right, 2 people can’t agree on a name!!! PATHETIC!!!! Here she is…

2015-01-11 20.03.41

Shortly after getting her home I remembered why I never had indoor cats before…..I’m allergic. Yep, sneezing, stuffiness, swollen eyes. Oh yeah! So, I have been on Benedryl all week! BUT I have read that eventually you build a resistance to the cat in your house.

Has anyone experienced this?

So there you have the last 7 days here in The Gap….a schlew (a hillbilly word) of snotty symptoms. It ain’t pretty folks but I didn’t want y’all to forget about me so I had to let you know what I was up to!

There was a little sewing but I’ll save that for another day, can’t share all the good stuff at one time.

January Project

The rules of the Lovely Year of Finishes are to only  pick ONE PROJECT to finish in the designated month. While I want to simply pick the quickest to finish, I am not going to do that. Instead, I am going to pick a different one and push myself a bit.

One of the four Hero Quilts simply needs to finished quilted and then bound (no time at all) but any one of the other 3 requires an expansion in size (more on that later) and then layering, quilting, and binding.

I am going to choose one of those from my 2015 First Quarter Projects. Because the recipient of the four of these quilts (well, the mom of the four boys receiving these quilts) reads my blog – occasionally anyway – I can’t post a pic of the full quilt. For that reason, this is all I can share:

hero2

That note is from when I set about layering all four of the quilts to discover my math had been off and 3 of the 4 were the wrong size and I needed to be creative about making them bigger…..Oh yeah, that happened!!

2015 First Quarter Projects

Yesterday I posted all my current UFOs. Today I will make the decision on what I plan on completing this quarter. UGH…I hate making these decisions. HATE, HATE, HATE it!! However, it must be done.

I know I need to get these Hero Quilts done…all four of them (they should be done by end of February)

Ok…I admit this list is a bit ambitious BUT one never knows what they might be in the mood to work on. I figure it is better to dream big and then if I get a great big ole burst of energy then I have included the projects on my list and can get an entry for them in the Finish A Long (which I will link to when the time is right)!

I know I haven’t said this lately so let me say it now, I am so blessed to have found such fabulous hosts for the Finish A Long. Leanne and Katy were amazing and I know Adrienne will be equally as amazing. I hope you are all enjoying it. Should you have any questions please ask away. Please remember you don’t have to have a blog to participate. You can use Flickr, Instagram, or even Facebook. All you need is the ability to link up. Let me (or any of us) know if you need help with any of these.

Well, no time like the present to get started…

2015 UFO List

Its that time of year again…you know that time when things seem to be new and fresh and all things seem to be possible. Well, it is this time of year when I look at my list of UFOs. I pray 2015 is a very different year for me. Last year was very unsettling and therefore I got very little done, did very little blogging, and honestly, felt quite poorly a great deal of the year.

As a result, my UFO list looks very similar. Similar but longer. I found a few projects that somehow never made it to the UFO list…weird. Regardless, I am excited about what 2015 will be for me creatively!!! Without further ado, here is my current UFO

  1. Batik Nature BOM – Top complete/back done **Bonnie Batik**batik nature collage

  20. Orphan Blocks into Something – Too many to name (these are good to practice FMQ on)orphan blocks

Tomorrow, I will narrow this list down a bit and tell you what I will work on this quarter (necessary for the FAL2015) and then on Sunday, I will narrow it down even further (necessary for the Lovely Year of Finishes) and tell you what I will work on this month. Accountability is important!!!!

Speaking of accountability…something else I decided to commit to for 2015 is Sew My Stash 2015. In 2014 I was real good about shopping for fabric and recently I cleaned out my scrap bin (it was seriously overflowing) and sold it for real cheap! All this combined felt like a good cleansing. Since I have so many UFOs to finish there really isn’t a need to buy any excess. **wink wink**

Well, better get started….

Finish-A-Long & IG – A Simple Tutorial

One cannot deny the major role Instagram plays in the blogging world today. It can have great impacts on the business world, it can impact your personal world both positively and negatively, and I think us quilters have seen it slowly take the place of Flickr (at least that is my observation).

Well, it’s time the for the Finish-A-Long to catch up and allow y’all to utilize Instagram to post your list at the start of each quarter and your finishes at the end of each quarter.

Currently there is a giveaway going on… all you need do is sign up to follow the new Finish-A-Long IG account @finishalong.and tag a friend in the giveaway post. Of course spreading the word on IG would be greatly appreciated as well.  On December 31st I will draw from all the followers and giveaway this FQ bundle:

This could be yours!
This could be yours!

A few people have asked how IG (instagram) will fit into the FAL (finish-a-long) world, so let me explain:

You know how you can use Flickr to post pictures of your started project (pre-finish) or your finished project and then link up with the host at the beginning or end of the quarter? Well if you so desire you can now use IG instead of Flickr (this is not to say you can’t use Flickr any longer, it’s simply another option).

And just in case you don’t know how to get your link from IG, here’s how:

#1 – Do this from your phone, tablet or something along those lines. Instagram on a pc ummm…is there a way to say this classy like…well, no….it SUCKS!!!! So don’t attempt this from your pc… Instagram is an app so do it from a tablet, phone, phablet, I think you get the picture.

#2 – At the start of the quarter, post a picture of all your WIPs with a list describing them in the comment.  PLEASE POST A SINGLE PICTURE OF ALL YOUR WIPS FOR THE QUARTER.  If you post multiple lists, it is too hard for the host to go back and match up your finishes with your list at the end of the quarter. (If you don’t have a blog and are moving from Flickr there are apps for creating collage pics on your phone – specifically for IG)  Link your list/collage post using the instructions below.  At the end of each quarter, post a separate picture of each finish, and link each picture separately using the instructions below.  Tag @finishalong and use the hashtag #2015fal in your posts! **If you need suggestions for collage apps just ask @finishalong**

#3 – When you are ready to link up – find your picture…like this one:, and scroll down to the bottom of the comments.Scroll all the way to the bottom of the comments until you find the three gray dots stacked on top of each other (like the ones inside the pink circle below) and click on them:

screen2
Android Phone
iPhone
iPhone

#4 – After you click on them you get 4 options (as long as it is your picture you are clicking on). click on “Copy Share URL”

screen3
Android Phone
iPhone
iPhone

#5 – You will get a small box (color depends on theme and type of phone). That is confirmation that it has has been copied, it will look like this:

screen4
Android Phone
iPhone
iPhone

#6 – From here you simply go to the Linky Party at On the Windy Side and paste your link in the InLinkz widget. Of course, you generally have to fill in other information, but your link is now on your clipboard. InLinkz now supports IG and you can read all about how to add your now extracted URL (link) on their blog here. **I was going to try and explain it here but they do such a good job, why reinvent the wheel?**

NOTE: I have posted two different sets of pictures, iPhone (thanks Adrienne) and Android to attempt to make this as visual as possible. Should you have any questions, email me or send me an IG message at @finishalong or @gapquilter –  I love me some IG!!!!

There you have it…a tutorial on how to get your link from IG and a giveaway to boot. Remember, you must become a follower of @finishalong on IG by December 31st in order to win the FQ bundle. Easy peasy!!

#ModernInstaBee2014

Almost a year ago, I signed up for the Modern Insta Bee 2014. It is an Instagram Bee using the book, Modern Bee: 13 quilts to make with friends by Lindsay Conner.

I believe we started in February, who can remember that far back? Regardless, I thought it would be fun to show you the blocks I have made for this Bee.

Just for kicks and giggles, let’s start with the most dreaded block. I know I’m not the only one because of some of the comments on IG after the Queen for September sent us direction for the month. I was certainly not looking forward to the curves but I am always willing to learn, so I pushed forward and was quite pleased with my block:

Sept uncropped
A scrappy gray everywhere except the arcs which were to be a scrappy teal/aqua. I can’t wait to see this quilt put together.

Another block which took some forethought but will absolutely lovely was the month of May:

may uncropped
Red, White & Black – what a gorgeous combination

The hashtag – We are Hive 7 (not sure how many total hives there ended up being but I know there were MANY) and we lost a member or two so we grabbed that hashtag #hive7eleven

The most popular block was this one:

April

June
June
March

November

November (I was the angel block maker since we are short a member)

The month that required the most fabric shopping was October because she wanted a Halloween block and I just didn’t have any Halloween fabric (boy that fabric shopping was terrible! hehehe):

Possibly the worst block picture EVER!!
Possibly the worst block picture EVER!!

And then there are my two favorite blocks we made – February & August. I love the depth of February and the simplicity of August:

August

February - there are two blocks pictured here too (another angel month)
February

I haven’t shown any blocks for July because that was the month I was Queen Bee and that will bee a UFO for me so I will be posting a whole write-up on that very soon.  Here you have my #moderninstabee2014 #hive7eleven sewing in a nutshell. We have 2 more months to go.

I have decided NO MORE bees or swaps in 2015 – UFOs or #selfishsewing only. I have to clear my sewing room….it is completely out of hand. So….I will be playing hard at the Finish-A-Long next year. Lots of links and finishing for me.

Well there you have a small part of my 2014 sewing…

More to show later

Ready for **BIG** FAL News??

How long you been following the Finish-A-Long? Since its inception in 2012 here at Quilter in The Gap…

FAL button 2

or since it was with Leanne at She Can Quilt

2013 button

Or with Katy at The Littlest Thistle

Finish Along 2014

Regardless of how long you have been following the Finish A Long you are aware that every year the hostess changes. Today I get to share with you who will be hosting in 2015!!! It’s ……..

Adrianne

of

On the Windy Side!!!!!

Let me tell you what I know….I know her energy is exhausting to me. You want to know how I know that? Simply look at her 2014 Finished Projects tab. There are 29 items on it….Seriously? I will be lucky to finish 5 this year. Now in a self-supporting, make-myself-feel-better-kinda-way I will say I have had quite the challenging year BUT I know Adrianne’s job is quite challenging and time consuming AND I follow her IG feed so I know she makes a quilt block a day on top of all these projects. Oh.Em.Gee!!

Here is your new button. This may come in handy later for giveaways and such. This is the larger size. A little later in the game we will have a smaller size for those of you who prefer that.

2015FALbutton200-1

Also the rumor mill tells me she has some pretty exciting things coming up in 2015 so keep your eyes open for those….so beans spilling here…you’ll have to wait!!!!!

This is not all the **BIG** Finish-A-Long news…..keep your eyes on Instagram for a new way to post pictures of your projects. Sometime in mid-December there will be a giveaway for those of you who decided to follow the new IG account so keep your eyes open for that. Oh and…..I will post a tutorial on how IG will work with the Linky.

Just to keep it real….as of Thanksgiving (US) you have 5 weeks for 35 days (give or take a day or 3) to get your finishes done…..that’s not much time so you better get to sewing, knitting, crocheting or whatever it is that requires your attention to call it finished.

Please take a moment and give Adrianne some love….

Callee

One of my fellow quilt bloggers (hello, PennyDog) made comment on my last post about how big Callee was getting. I then realized y’all haven’t seen much of her recently. What a shame! So, in an attempt to fix this very unfortunate situation (hehehehe) here you are….

Life…

…is always in  my way.  So for the last 3 months I had to choose and blogging lost. Which is really too bad because….

….can really bite the pickle sometimes.

The above picture is the best image I have ever seen to depict Alzheimers Disease. I have shared here and on my Podcast my grandmother’s struggle with this terrible disease. October 31, the day after she turned 86, she won her battle. Won, you ask? Yes, she struggles no more…. because she is now resting with the Lord. In the end she knew no one, spoke no more, ate no more and therefore lived no more. Now she lives and wins!

But…its our loss and therefore, life bites the pickle sometimes!!

….can be such a blessing at other times!!!

2014-10-10 13.02.23-1

My Callee came and seen me and we had a formal Tea Party together. We got all dressed up, her mommy made us a cake, we wore fancy gloves & hats, drank “tea” (really Sunny D), and we remembered our manners. It was so very much fun! I miss that girl!!!!

…is hopefully getting back to normal.

Well….maybe not!!!!

So glad to be back…..

Technical Assistance Needed

three_superheros_400_clr

I am seriously hoping one of my readers (or even someone they know) is will feel like this after they fix my problem. Ok…here’s my problem…..

I have finally updated my list of blogs as I said needed to be done here. N.E.Way….I am not able to leave comments on blogger….nowheres (that is some serious hillbilly speaks). I type it out, click “Publish” and absolutely nothing happens. It just goes right back to the screen as if I did nothing.

It doesn’t matter what Blogger Blog I try to comment on but it will not allow me to leave a comment. I can comment on WordPress blogs just fine but NOT on Blogger blogs.

I have tried looking for answers on Blogger but haven’t found anything….but then again, I don’t think I am really good at navigating Blogger!

UPDATED TO ADD: I am sure you have figured this out by now but THIS is why I haven’t commented on your blogs and this is also why I CANNOT WIN ANY GIVEAWAYS!!!!!

Can anyone help?
